Based only on demonstrated abilities, Yamato edges out over Asuma thanks to having been able to show quite a lot more ? many different mokuton jutsu and rather impressive suiton and doton jutsu. The two of them appear to be on a similar level, but Asuma never really got going in any fight, using minimal force on Hidan until he lost pretty suddenly. What Asuma definitely has is not really sufficient: Tenzō's use of moku bunshin and the sort of mokuton ninjutsu he used against Kakuzu puts Asuma at too much of a disadvantage at mid-range, and Asuma can't convincingly force a close-range fight.
Had Asuma been able to show off a little more, I expect he would narrowly be able to beat Yamato ? his style seems quite appropriate for dealing with Yamato, as he seems to be designed as a fast-paced mid-range skirmisher with powerful, quick and accurate attacks. He probably had a few improvements to show over his fūton-infused chakra blades which would have stepped the ability up from the low jōnin tier it and hien appeared to be on to the high jōnin tier he seems to be at.
