Questions Why do avatars lose picture quality on upload?

Whenever i upload an avatar it always looks blurry on actual threads, regardless of how good the original pictures quality is :catthinks

Try using photoshop, gimp, pixlr, etc instead. The automatic resizing of this site will never yield great results

actual avatar size is 175x250, so scale them to that.
you can use things smaller than that size too and they'll show up fine.
if you want bigger avatar (175x350) then you must win a prize
if you want biggerer avatar you must befriend bxxmon

It's actually 174x250 and 174x350. Makes no sense, I know

are you not using the top tier option?
I wish top tier was an option, but it genuinely irks me:

Spoiler: Top tier

Spoiler: default

In general, the way the "userbox" next to a post looks was way better during the vBulletin days which is just sad. I haven't looked into it that much but from a glance: by default avatars will try to "fill" your max avatar size which is just laughably bad design. In the past, if you uploaded an avatar that was above the max allowed dimensions it would only scale downwards.

I'm not even sure what's happening in "top tier". Does it have a fixed box for avatars?

I remember when avatars didnt get pixelated and we could even have animated ones. It's like Dmxx its using the money he gets from foolish donators to make the website less fun and more shitty. Rather than to improve it.

Money laundering? who the hell knows. it could be anything at this point.

We optimize images, yes. And ofc its blurry if you zoom in.

Sure the images are not wrong ?

@JFF another wonderful thing you destroyed on this forum: avatars.
Optimized )

No, they're not wrong. Top tier has extremely weird avatar/name placements with some avatars.

Also to illustrate my gripes with how Fanverse deals with avatars under the max dimension size:

The above is a 175x175 avatar, the border represents the max/default avatar size of 175x250 (let's forget about the missing pixel for now).

And this is what fanverse does with it:

The avatar gets enlarged and "cropped" (not exactly) to fit the dimensions, which completely ruins it.

Yes, it gets cropped. But the image is larger, therefore it gets cropped.

It is Fanverse that enlarges the image because it inexplicably wants avatars to be an exact size (175x250/175x350). 175x175 would be within the max dimensions, but the way it's set it will scale it upwards to 250x250 and cut off the width to make it 175x250. This is completely asinine and a step down from what we had in the past.

In the past and up until the last major upgrade, Naruto was the tech staff who usually handled that part, so we had the various sizes automatically fitting into the sizes without cropping the images. However, it's something that only techs like him or dream would be able to explain better to you, not me, for sure. In the upgrade thread here in Q&C at the time, it was mentioned, and i believe they might have explained it a bit.But i don't think Naruto's code is acceptable for our sadmins.

It still seems like a lot of the issues with the avatars are fixed if you change to the Naruto Legacy skin, unfortunately that skin is literally only in the old white color and for some reason there is no option for it to be in dark mode.

Even if the person zooms in on their avatar the way that they did in the picture above, it shouldn't create that kind of blur, so long as the image is clean.

The thing I am doing that seems to help me at least is just doing the exact dimensions of 175x250/350. I don't ever let the site crop this for me or shrink it because it is going to cause an issue.

I think that somewhere else on here it still says the max avatar size is 400x400, which is just no, it's not. Why is it telling people that?

Well, think about it, how else todo it when the idea is an bigger height then width ratio ?

But why do they need to conform to the default size? Why can't I use a 175x175 avatar? It should only be scaling down if it's too big, not the other way around. That's how it used to be.

why is the scaling different between top tier and default?
should just be for gifs to play last i checked.

Because it would require 250x250 or 350x350 then ) and that does not fit.

Its not zoomed in, its a screenshot of how it appears on an un-zoomed in page.

Whenever viewing the same avatar on my profile page it suddenly looks must sharper and clearer

I might have figured something out, I changed this from the 175x350 to the 175x250 when my stuff stopped this morning and I managed to preserve the quality by reducing the DPI and JPEG quality.

Normally, I wouldn't even save anything in JPEG format because, ew, that's fucking gross. But I think PNG causes it to reduce your image quality by a lot more
