The One And Only!
One of the most important pieces of the story of Naruto is Uchiha Sasuke and the fallen Uchiha clan. But it is not only the bonds between Naruto and Sasuke that drives the series, but also the Sharingan, the legendary doujutsu possessed by the Uchiha that makes them equally or more powerful than the average shinboi through the following:
A) Visual Perception: An Uchiha is able to not only predict the movements of a enemy, but also see their Chakra and use that with their knowledge of prior jutsus and seeing many ninja fight over the years, allows them to *Predict* the enemies movements. It is not magic but rather training the eye to how the average ninja will move that makes Uchiha able to counter any attacks that may come. It's like the old adage "Practice makes perfect".
B) Genjutsu: Probably the most fearsome of all Uchiha abilities. Using genjutsu they are able to stop an enemy before they can even take a step against them and suffer from little or no physical harm at all. This is greater than any ninjutsu as the user is able to project* any idea on the intended target with little consequence.
C) Copying: Because Uchiha can copy opponents skills, they have a great advantage in battles. Most of the time when it comes down to it, the ninja with the better elemental affinity will win a match if their jutsu are stronger than their opponent.
The Secret of the Uchiha’s strength like all things, lies in their experience with the Sharingan. At first the doujutsu is rather weak, but over the course of time as they encounter more opponents and are able to copy both physical and ninjutsu styles, their ability to counter average ninja increases and makes them all the more terrifying.
But how does it all work? In this short essay I will attempt to explain this, with a little bit of logic and a little bit of understanding of how the human eye works.
Above is a cross section of the human eye. The main pint of contention here will deal with the optic nerve and it’s correlation to the brain and surrounding areas. As you can see the optic nerve has a direct connection to the brain and most interesting of all , to the area responsible for memory and emotions. This will be relevant later to Genjutsu and the copy ability.
Visual Perception and Activation of the Sharingan
When looking at an object, the eye fills in with light in order to understand the reality reflecting on it. This is your eyesight. When it is dark your pupils will expand to let in more light in order to get a better grasp of your surroundings; and when it’s bright they will shrink to allow you to focus better. The Sharingan works by forcibly expanding the pupils to accept more light which leads to damage over time(Will be explained later on) as excessive light damages the retina over time. It's same reason as why you're supposed to look directly into the sun. Notice how the light shines into the lens and sends the information to your brain to create an image, where all your memories and thoughts are stored. It is due to the light which causes your pupils to either expand or shrink depending on the severity of light or lack thereof. Something interesting about the Sharingan though is the ability for its growth and the addition of tomes. It would seem pointless at first to have 4 total tomes in all, but closer inspection reveals the reason for this. Here's the idea, imagine that your eye has 4 optic nerve connections instead of 1, now in the case of Uchiha, when they are born they neither have the Sharingan or extra pupils present but must rather gain them through experience and emotional triggers. Later in genjutsu we will go more in depth about the emotional aspect, but for now, lets look at several things.
COLOUR: The cones are responsible for colour identification and notice something interesting between the colour of the Sharingan, most likely due to the eye straining excessively when 4 pupils are active at ONCE, additional blood may be needed in order to fuel the Sharingan at full tilt. This could likely be a reason for Itachi bleeding after using the Mangekyou Sharingan to much against Sasuke. The cones are in the following: 6 to 7 million cones can be divided into "red" cones (64%), "green" cones (32%), and "blue" cones (2%) based on measured response curves. They provide the eye's color sensitivity. The green and red cones are concentrated in the fovea centralis .
Additional Tomes: So you have a primary pupil which is active when you are born and 3 additional ones that are dormant. Now can the eye expand and shrink? Why yes it can. Depending on the amount of light your eyes will adjust to give you optimal vision with blinding yourself and without losing to much sight. It is because of this that the additional tomes are activated. VIA LIGHT AND EMOTIONS as a lesser factor, one can unlock the other tomes. Why? Your eyes have CONES and RODS, the cones provide colour sensitivity and the rods are photorecptors. They are affected by light! Now think of Photosynthesis for a moment and remember that in the process of photosynthesis, plants "rise" towards the sun and absorb the light in order to grow, in essence the human eye works in the same way.

The more an Uchiha strains their eyes and focuses the better the neurons can fire and eventually over time the dormant pupils will awaken due to constant exposure of light and the ability for additional processing to be done, thanks to the Sharingan.More than one thousand times as sensitive as the cones, they can reportedly be triggered by individual photons under optimal conditions. The optimum dark-adapted vision is obtained only after a considerable period of darkness, say 30 minutes or longer, because the rod adaption process is much slower than that of the cones.
