The One And Only!
One of the most important pieces of the story of Naruto is Uchiha Sasuke and the fallen Uchiha clan. But it is not only the bonds between Naruto and Sasuke that drives the series, but also the Sharingan, the legendary doujutsu possessed by the Uchiha that makes them equally or more powerful than the average shinboi through the following:

A) Visual Perception: An Uchiha is able to not only predict the movements of a enemy, but also see their Chakra and use that with their knowledge of prior jutsus and seeing many ninja fight over the years, allows them to *Predict* the enemies movements. It is not magic but rather training the eye to how the average ninja will move that makes Uchiha able to counter any attacks that may come. It's like the old adage "Practice makes perfect".

B) Genjutsu: Probably the most fearsome of all Uchiha abilities. Using genjutsu they are able to stop an enemy before they can even take a step against them and suffer from little or no physical harm at all. This is greater than any ninjutsu as the user is able to project* any idea on the intended target with little consequence.

C) Copying: Because Uchiha can copy opponents skills, they have a great advantage in battles. Most of the time when it comes down to it, the ninja with the better elemental affinity will win a match if their jutsu are stronger than their opponent.
The Secret of the Uchiha’s strength like all things, lies in their experience with the Sharingan. At first the doujutsu is rather weak, but over the course of time as they encounter more opponents and are able to copy both physical and ninjutsu styles, their ability to counter average ninja increases and makes them all the more terrifying.

But how does it all work? In this short essay I will attempt to explain this, with a little bit of logic and a little bit of understanding of how the human eye works.

Above is a cross section of the human eye. The main pint of contention here will deal with the optic nerve and it’s correlation to the brain and surrounding areas. As you can see the optic nerve has a direct connection to the brain and most interesting of all , to the area responsible for memory and emotions. This will be relevant later to Genjutsu and the copy ability.

Visual Perception and Activation of the Sharingan

When looking at an object, the eye fills in with light in order to understand the reality reflecting on it. This is your eyesight. When it is dark your pupils will expand to let in more light in order to get a better grasp of your surroundings; and when it’s bright they will shrink to allow you to focus better. The Sharingan works by forcibly expanding the pupils to accept more light which leads to damage over time(Will be explained later on) as excessive light damages the retina over time. It's same reason as why you're supposed to look directly into the sun. Notice how the light shines into the lens and sends the information to your brain to create an image, where all your memories and thoughts are stored. It is due to the light which causes your pupils to either expand or shrink depending on the severity of light or lack thereof. Something interesting about the Sharingan though is the ability for its growth and the addition of tomes. It would seem pointless at first to have 4 total tomes in all, but closer inspection reveals the reason for this. Here's the idea, imagine that your eye has 4 optic nerve connections instead of 1, now in the case of Uchiha, when they are born they neither have the Sharingan or extra pupils present but must rather gain them through experience and emotional triggers. Later in genjutsu we will go more in depth about the emotional aspect, but for now, lets look at several things.

COLOUR: The cones are responsible for colour identification and notice something interesting between the colour of the Sharingan, most likely due to the eye straining excessively when 4 pupils are active at ONCE, additional blood may be needed in order to fuel the Sharingan at full tilt. This could likely be a reason for Itachi bleeding after using the Mangekyou Sharingan to much against Sasuke. The cones are in the following: 6 to 7 million cones can be divided into "red" cones (64%), "green" cones (32%), and "blue" cones (2%) based on measured response curves. They provide the eye's color sensitivity. The green and red cones are concentrated in the fovea centralis .

Additional Tomes:
So you have a primary pupil which is active when you are born and 3 additional ones that are dormant. Now can the eye expand and shrink? Why yes it can. Depending on the amount of light your eyes will adjust to give you optimal vision with blinding yourself and without losing to much sight. It is because of this that the additional tomes are activated. VIA LIGHT AND EMOTIONS as a lesser factor, one can unlock the other tomes. Why? Your eyes have CONES and RODS, the cones provide colour sensitivity and the rods are photorecptors. They are affected by light! Now think of Photosynthesis for a moment and remember that in the process of photosynthesis, plants "rise" towards the sun and absorb the light in order to grow, in essence the human eye works in the same way.
More than one thousand times as sensitive as the cones, they can reportedly be triggered by individual photons under optimal conditions. The optimum dark-adapted vision is obtained only after a considerable period of darkness, say 30 minutes or longer, because the rod adaption process is much slower than that of the cones.
The more an Uchiha strains their eyes and focuses the better the neurons can fire and eventually over time the dormant pupils will awaken due to constant exposure of light and the ability for additional processing to be done, thanks to the Sharingan.

In kakashi Gaiden, we are given the chance the see the Sharingan come to fruition and pay attention, by strong emotions. While light does play a major role, so does emotions in activating the additional pupils. Thanks to adrenaline which is often released in high pressure situations, the eyes will expand and allow for more light to enter. Notice how obito has a strong recollection of the memories important to him and how he is in a "charged" state as the rock ninja are surround him, Kakashi and Rin.

"Sharingan"

Genjutsu:
Now we know from the manga and the information above that emotions play a large role in the use and activation of the Sharingan. But it is the ability to project an image that one conjures in their mind that they are then able to force onto another person. Notice how the eyes have a direction connection to ones memory and thought process areas.

This is obviously necessary in order for you the understand what you are actually perceiving in real time, the Sharingan makes use of this fact in order for the user literally replay their thoughts and memories via the Sharingan almost like a projector.

This causes the victim who looks into their eyes trapped in the Uchihas own world. There is no actual world created or any magic* of sorts, all that occurs is hypnosis. The brain takes what it perceives as reality via the hypnosis and responds to that, people can be made to believe that they are different animals, beings etc. This is what makes the Sharingan so deadly, you are thrown into a hypnosis that your brain thinks is real, you are figthting one moment and the next you are being chased by a runaway train. Your heart rate increases, blood pressure, adrenaline and...your pupils expand allowing for the Sharingan to affect you even more. All of these things takes a tole on your body and once released from the Genjutsu, your body accounts for what it thinks was real. This is what causes those caught in Genjutsu to appear dazed after being released from it and the sudden appearance of physical exertion. Notice Kakashi after he?s released from Tsukiyomi and his comment about how it feels like 3 days have passes, even though there are NO PHYSICAL WOUNDS on his body, yet his mind believes that damage had been done, thus resulting in his physical degradation.

But note how there must be direct contact between the user and the victims eyes all the time we've seen Tsukiyomi or powerful genjutsu used, the Sharingan user has always had to close their eyes for a brief moment of time and let the attack "buffer" the image and or memories they wish to use must first be created and then "streamed" to the victims mind. Notice how Itachi closes his eyes before releasing Tsukiyomi on Kakashi and again picks Sasuke up and brings him to eye level in order to maximize the effect of Tsukiyomi.

Can this be avoided though? Yes. note how when Itachi and Kisame come to Konoha and engage in combat with Kakashi, Kurenai, Asuma are all defeated, Kakashi warns them to close their eyes and they do so in order to not be affected by the Sharingan. It is not until Gai explains that the reflection of the eyes causes the hypnosis and as long as they avoid that, they can fight with Itachi.

Magekyou Sharingan, Strain and loss of sight: Now one of the newest factors brought into the story of the Sharingan as of late has been it's inevitable decline and wear and tear. At first I too was puzzled by this until I realized something critical, the activiation of the Sharingan itself require tremendous amount of chakra(Stamina/Spirit) and straining of the eyes along with increased blood flow to the eyes. Notice the strain put on Itachis eyes as he forced the tomes together to create the magekyou, the optical nerves TWIST and focus as one on the intended target. This is why we've never seen any Uchiha use Mangekyou Sharingan 24/7 unlike the 1-3 tome Sharingans. This is also one of the reasons why Itachi and Sasuke both have used typically kept their Sharingan active even when not in use, because the strain used to activate the 3 tome alone is strong enough that it is best to keep it active at long periods of time instead of constantly reactivating it. Almost like a computer.

So in conclusion I'd like to thank you guy for reading up on my theory and wish me luck in my epic questions to become an Optometrist >_>

Questions and comments will be taken as well!

+reps, didnt go reading through it all, since most is already known(losing eye sight etc...), but the hard work you put into it...

I be an evil girl not to say, that is impressive :iria

great job

Very nice read, and you will get +rep for it, but i didnt saw that you explained something about MS.

He is gained through killing your best friend, it doesnt have to do anything with eye directly.

So, how does killing your best friend affects optical nerves to twist and form MS? I would like to hear that. Also, take into consideration the PMS, and changing eyes, so it would be good if you can explain that to, i would like to see it all in one place.

Anyway, nice thinking, and it has a little logic.

Thanks guys:laughAnd I'm glad you're asking questions since it may fill in any gaps I may have missed.

As for Mangekyou Sharingan I thought at first as well that it could be obtained by killing your best friend. But as we manga readers know, that seems to be false due to Kakashi and also because Sasuke will need to obtain it somehow in the future without killing Naruto.

I think there's room to allow for 2 possibilities on the MS, we don't have to much to go on about it so I based it on what we knew.

As for obtaining PMS by taking a siblings eyes, I think it has to do with the Sharingan itself. The 3 other pupils are rather small in comparison to the primary one, they are basically they to help facilitate the memorization and recall aspects of the Sharingan.

Imagine if you had 4 eyes going at once, you'd be able to take in a lot more information and remember a good chunk of it as well. I think when one adds another set of eyes to theirs it DOUBLES the total size of the pupils(When MS is used, the primary pupil is almost non existent and the eye twists into the kaleidoscope shape). So one could theoretically have a full Sharingan with 3 full size pupils and double the bandwith of the primary one.

Nice job! Reps for ya. I realized just now, Why Kakashi's and Itachi's MS are different from each other ?

Well, i think that there are 2 ways of awakening MS.

1. Killing your best friend
2. What ever Kakashi did to get it.

As for option NO1, i tried to understand why it is a requirement that he must kill his best friend. And i think that it isnt the sole point in killing your best friend, because eye doesnt "know" did you kill your best friend or not.

Since sharingan and its development is in close contact with stress and preasure, and life/death situations, i think that what awakes MS is the stress and tension that body and mind are going through WHEN YOU KILL YOUR BEST FRIEND.

Now, since normal sharingan gains tomoe when a persons mind and brain goes through a stressful situation, which is in direct connection with eyes, im guessing that killing your best friend makes even more stress and preasure, which pushes brain and mind, and thus the eyes, over the edge totally. That is how MS is awaken.

Only a theory though :)
