The outcome of this battle is due to sasuke's strength and luck

The Scientist

Perverted Sanin
in this chapter, we all found out that Itachi, all but assured of victory collapsed due to the strain and the toll of all the high powered MS techniques he used took, while fighting Sasuke. Because he was able to block or deal with all of sasuke's jutsu, it feels like Sasuke did not defeat him, and he would have won the battle fair and square, but then let us think back. is there anyone that we know of in the manga who could have, or has ever brought Itachi to this point? where he had to use everything he had to endure? there is nobody, who we know of that Itachi has fought and the fight has taken that much out of him. Sasuke did defeat Itachi in this fight, and it took a combination of both his strength and his luck, pretty much every bit of each, to be able to win this fight.

his strength was reason this fight went on for so long. Itachi knew that it would not be easy to fight Sasuke. after all, his clone faced sasuke in the akatsuki hide out and he experienced one of sasuke's variations of chidori, which could hit from mid distance, and he also saw sasuke's speed. But then I don't think even Itachi saw himself using anything more than tsukiyomi, especially since sasuke hadn't developed MS. usually when Itachi fights, he uses his genjutsu, which is powerful enough to take care of probably 50% of the shinobis out there (just to be conservative) and for the other 50% who could deal with his genjutsu, he uses Tsukiyomi, which in his own experience is unbeatable. He probably realized that he may need Tsukiyomi to beat Sasuke, assuming that his Tsukiyomi would defeat Sasuke just like the previous times. but Sasuke has improved his genjutsu, and his genjutsu counter, among other things. due to sasuke's strength, he was able to deal with not only tsukiyomi, but amaterasu, and also had his own ultimate technique (kirin), to which itachi had to resort to susanoo just to counter. Because Sasuke was strong enough, Itachi had to use all of this MS techniques just to deal with him. using all of this techniques contributed to his downfall, since he just ran out of gas at the end, combined with the side effect of using all those jutsus.

Sasuke's victory was also as a result of luck. Sure he was powerful, but like I mentioned, he was just strong enough to force Itachi to resort to his ultimate technique. I think we call all agree that kirin would not defeat susanoo, and there dosen't seem to be any evidence that Sasuke had anything else more powerful. It seems sasuke developed this technique for his eventual confrontation with Itachi, without counting on Itachi having susanoo. Itachi countered Kirin with susanoo, leaving sasuke with just orochimaru, which sauske used, since he could not go on. think of it. sasuke could have been depleted before itachi used susano, and that would probably have been the end of him, but he ran out just before Itachi ran out, which is an incredible stroke of luck and timing. This luck, along with his ability to hang in there with itachi and wear him out, all contributed to the outcome of this battle. looking at all of these, I would say sasuke did win, because short of madara, or shodai, or youndaime, I dont know who else could take Itachi even close to his limit or force him to use his best jutsus.

yes sasuke did "win" but what most people fail to see is that sasuke's intent in this fight was to kill where as itachi needed to spare sasuke in order to get his eyes. If this was a true fight to the death between both of them itachi could have just simply killed him with susano-o. I do agree that sasuke has proven that he is really strong in that he took itachi to his limits but he still is not stronger than itachi and in this case the stronger shinobi did not win.

Incorrect. Itachis intent in this fight was to not damage the eyes. Sasukes well being in general was meaningless, as well as his current state of life. Itachi didn't need him alive, and he didn't hold back in trying to keep him unharmed, as shown by him blowing away 70% of Sasukes body with Amaterasu. He tried to avoid the head, but thats not saying much, because the head is a very small part of the body, thats conveniently separated from the rest of the body via the neck.
