Susano'o?

I've read the latest manga through a couple of times and cant really decide what sort of a technique susano'o really is? It looks good :amazed but did he use hand seals, does it require chakra you get my drift.

I guess its an offensive/defensive because of the sword and sheild, but what exactly is it all about or be for that matter? Whats the history behind it thats what i dont know.

I was thinking aswell that if Itachi can still move while he is using that technique its one hell of a powerfull move, double team his opponent!
