GC 2006: StarCraft 2 Hints Dropped?
Is StarCraft 2 currently in the works? What other titles does Blizzard have stashed away for both PC and console?
by Tal Blevins

August 24, 2006 - While our meeting with Blizzard Chief Operating Officer Paul Sams today at the German Games Convention mainly focused on The Burning Crusade, the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, we did ask him about what the future holds in store for Blizzard, and specifically about StarCraft 2.

"StarCraft is my absolutely favorite game of all time," Sams told us. "As you probably already know, there is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2."

While Sams wasn't ready to spill the beans just yet, he did say Blizzard "will have a major product announcement in 2007," and that Blizzard was currently working on at least three other unannounced titles at the moment.

In terms of what these games could be, we asked if they would fall in line with the major success Blizzard has had with World of Warcraft. "I want to be clear that we're not just content to be an MMO company," Sams explained. "Some other companies get into the role of making just MMOs, but Blizzard lets the developers pick what they want to work on, and it's not all MMOs."

When asked about StarCraft: Ghost, Sams said that it was on indefinite hold, but that Blizzard wasn't averse to exploring further console development in the future. "We've been up to MS and they've been at our office talking about Vista and 360," Sams said, "and we're certainly excited about some of the tools they have to offer in the console world as well as with Vista and DirectX 10. However, with our own online gaming service, we're going to pick and choose what we want to use; we're going to protect Battle.net and make sure Battle.net ranks supreme."

So do you think it will happen?

It might. But, by the time SC2 comes out, or Diablo 3 comes out, nobody will care.

The games will suck, and there will be 1,000 other games out that are better than it. I have come to terms with the fact that Blizzard sucks now, and that I will never play Starcraft 2, or Diablo 3.

The teams that made them are in other companies now, for the most part that is. Anything Blizzard makes now, will be shit. I refer to their recent games as point of reference.

Here, cry on my shoulder... :(

:( It pains my soul to think that you could be right CMX.

I would still have to play SC2 if it came out, just for the sake of how good the original was.

I figure one of those titles might be Warcraft IV there are alot of Warcraft fans who still want a stratgy game to come out and pick up on the Warcraft lore even if its just to expand the story for WoW. Another idea is it will be the announcement of what will be the 2nd expansion for WoW.

Warcraft is the money maker for blizzard however i would myself enjoy a starcraft 2 game

So Blizzard makes a different kind of RTS and an MMO that some people aren't particularly down with and you guys claim Blizzard is unable to make good games again?

Some fans you are.

Sadly, I have given up hope with Blizzard concerning the Starcraft Universe.
After the Ghost fiasco, and the 3 years or so of SC2 hints, I decided enough was enough, it was time to move on.

It showed so much promise, and then WoW became Blizzards only concern...

R.I.P. StarCraft 1998 - 2005

It will probably come out. But, like you guys have been saying it will most likely suck.
Also, what ever happened to "Starcraft: Ghost"? Wasn't that supposed to be out 2 years ago.

An unfortunate side effect of bureaucratic bungling within Blizzard.

How would SC 2 suck? O.o It would be at least better than SC. And I am dieing for a better version of SC to play on Bnet. Because the Custom games on SC were far better than WC imo. A SC MMO would be interesting :D

I have always hated Diablo for some reason, so I say this to Diablo.

Eat Shit and Die, bitch.

Because Blizzard is focusing on its biggest money maker right now, and It would ignore and ultimately destroy its other franchises, IE Diablo and StarCraft. From a business standpoint, they are doing the right thing, but from a innovative point, they are just feeding the masses the same stuff.

they should of released of SC2 along time ago.
Big $$ right there.

They cancelled ghost , IDK why , but they are no longer working on it.

I wouldnt mind playing SC2 though.

WoW is just getting more and more people and is makeing far more money then their old games. I think a news report said they make like nearly a billion a year on it. At this rate i say WoW will have 10 million people playing by next year ( already at 7 million). If the masses keep eating the same stuff then ofcourse they will keep it up. But they have more then enough brain power to keep improveing WoW and put out a new Starcraft they are just being lazzy.

You guys are fucking pathetic I'm sorry that's quite rude, but it's true. Just because this company doesn't do everything you want it to do that makes them greedy/lazy/suck?

Quit your crying. With 7 million people and growing at such a rate it should be very hard to keep things fresh and stable on WoW. They ARE working on other projects for sure. They just aren't ready to reveal them yet. It's not easy to constantly put out amazing games. And naturally you won't like everything they make.

Starcraft Ghost was put on hold simply because it wasn't fun I'm guessing. We may see it coming to next gen or PC later, but I suggest forgetting about it until Blizzard brings it up again.

Well, when you make all this hype about a game then just stop working on it all together it kinda makes you look bad. But ya, I liked all the other games (besides WOW becosue you must pay for online and from what I hear it isn't worth it.)I especially like Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3: Frozen Thrones.

I suppose you would have preferred that Blizzard made all the hype about the game and then release something that isn't fun? *assuming it was postponed due to lack of fun* They had the guts to officially postpone the game even after like four or five years of production and many delays. It's obvious to me they truly tried to make the best of the game, but ultimately it failed to live up to the Blizzard standard they have created.

any money that the warcraft title makes blizzard would be instantly dwarfed by the money Starcraft 2 (and World of Starcraft) would make them.

I believe Starcraft is the best selling game of all time.

Nah.
Spoiler: Top 20 Best Sellers
1. "Super Mario Bros." for NES: 40 Million Units

3. "Super Mario Bros. 3" for NES: 18 Million Units
4. "Super Mario World" for SNES: 17 Million Units
5. "Super Mario Land" for Gameboy: 14 Million Units
6. "Super Mario 64" for N64: 11 Million Units

It sold very well and is still a very popular and critically acclaimed game, but clearly it's not the best seller of all time.

SC is the national sport in some countries...definitly higher on the food chain than most games (*cough* mario *cough*)

I have already accepted that SC2 is just too awesome for this world and would cause all mankind to crap themselves to death if it ever came back.

You guys do notice that until only a year ago, Starcraft was the biggest game in pretyt much all of continental Asia. Blizzard knows the massive amount of money that can be made with this franchise, outside of America alone, and wont fuck it up that simply. Diablo 3 on the otehr hand.... I was never a fan of the first 2 anyhow, so who cares.

You do realize most of the top guys that made Diablo great left the company, yes? They even have their own company, with their own game.

Blizzard is obviously not the company it used to be. Pretending that they can still make a good game, is just blissful ignorance.

Blissful ignorance? A few people in the Blizzard North team does NOT equal the whole company. They have made good games since these people left. Maybe YOU don't like their new games. That's too bad for you because they are still damn good games.

As much as I want to like Hellgate London, it really doesn't look too fun yet.

I didn't say Hellgate looked fun, I just said they made their own company.

They are some of the key players behind the best games that Blizzard ever made, if you don't think that hurts them, you're nuts.

Let's look at their recent history, after Diablo 2: Warcraft III, expansion for WC3, WoW, expansion for WoW, Warcraft Movie, and a cancelled SC: Ghost.

They suck now.

Wait...that isn't a bad track record at all..what are you trying to pull CMX? I call shenanigans on that.

Seriously, for their age Blizzard is the 'best' game company in the world as they haven't released a title which hasn't made the bankers happy

All of their PC titles have sold in the millions at least
