Hey Heath! Glad to hear you liked Macross too.
Sounds like you haven't learned the basic storyline of the series. So just incase, here is a quick course in it.
Robotech was made from three unrelated japanese animes, Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada. There was an american robotech sequel series that was planned but was never finished. And just recently a sequel movie Robotech Shadow Chronicles was made.
But in Japan, Macross has had many sequels in both anime and videogames. First there was a movie, Ai Oboete Imasu ka? (Love, Do you Remember?) That movie retold the Macross story but with altered designs for the Zentraedi and the Macross(SDF-1). Female Zentraedi became a second race called Meltrandi. But basically the same plot as the series. Only real difference was Hikaru (Rick Hunter) was already a soldier when he first meets Minmay.
Then came Macross II, which was bad retelling of an Audrey Hepburn movie, and has been dropped from the continuity.
Then came Macross Plus and Macross 7 in the same year. Macross Plus is the better of the two. It's like Top Gun, a "maverick" pilot vs an "iceman" but then add in a female computer AI who goes killer (Like HAL in 2001).
On the other hand Macross 7 is about the 7th Macross fleet Earth has sent out to colonize other worlds. Max Jiinaas (Max Sterling) commands the fleet. While his wife, Miriya governs the civilian population. But the show is mostly about a rock band named Fire Bomber who save the day as the fleet hits....evil space vampires who hate music.
*cringes*
There is also Macross Zero, which takes place BEFORE the Macross TV Series. It's about Shin Kudo, (another guy like Top Gun's Maverick), a japanese-american fighter pilot who becomes involved in a battle for recently discovered remains of a highly advanced culture. The series also features a young Roy Focker piloting one of the first valkyrie (veritech) fightercraft.
