Most Depressing Animes of All time

The most depressing animes of all time, I honestly think that there are two that reign supreme over all others as completely and horribly depressing.

Jin-Roh the Wolf Brigade and the best anti-war film in history - Grave of the Fireflies

Honest to god, I saw Jin-Roh a few years back and loved it, then it had that incredibly depressing telling of the whole german folk tale and ended in the most horrifyingly depressing way I had seen to that date. I didn't think there existed anything more depressing, then I saw Grave of the Fireflies. When the movie ran from the beginning with the main character
Spoiler:
dying
, and the horrible life that they were subjected to resulting in
Spoiler:
his little sister's eventual death from malnutrition... seeing her eat the mud takoyaki at the end...
I couldn't keep it together. You ever seen something so depressing that it doesn't really sit in how depressing it is until the credits start rolling, when I realized that guard at the beginning
Spoiler:
actually had eaten part of his sister's ashes
I couldn't keep it together, I broke down, especially knowing that war shouldn't have happened. After seeing that movie, my approval of war on any terms completely disappeared. That movie should be played in every classroom on the planet, to show who war ultimately effects the most, and it's ultimate ramifications. So what do you guys think are the most depressing?

this is what you are looking for:
Number 1 most depressing anime: Grave of the Fireflies.
Number 2 most depressing anime: Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien.
Number 3 most depressing anime: Saikano.
Number 4 most depressing anime: Berserk.

there are others like Shingetsutan Tsukihime, Chrno Crusade, Narutaru, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. but they pale in comparison to the ones above.

1) Grave of The Fire Flies
2) Perfect Blue (Wierd..But Still Depressing)
3)Akira (Depressing...but it was exciting at the same time)
4) Princess Monoke

I have to go with X the movie he had to watch his best friend pull a sword out of his love and his friend enjoyed it

Is a perfect blue bad or just sad?

Grave of the Fireflies and Saikano are the most depressing animes I've ever seen. Let me just say this about these animes...don't EVER get attached to ANY of the characters...it makes you even more depressed.

PS Princess Mononoke wasn't depressing!! Same goes to X the movie...you're confused disappointment with depression with X the movie!!

oh please we all know its Chrno Crusade, even i the most cold hearted person on the planet shed a tear.

I would have to go with Air TV and Kimi ga Nozumo Eien. The last ep (ep.12) of Air was too much too handle. KGNE was pretty bad too but Air definetly struck a nerve. Fruits Basket was not depressing overall but there were some really, really sad moments.

One of the reasons I haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies yet is because I have heard from so many people that it is depressing as hell. I might give it a shot one day though.

Grave of the Fireflies most depressing to date. But also very meaningful. All those gun-happy, war-crying politicians ( = bastards!) should watch it.

Wolf's Rain was depressing, not for me personally cuz i thought it blew and it was boring but for somebody who liked it, i could see it as being pretty sad seeing as
Spoiler:
everyone dies in the end and they never get to their "paradise" or whatever it was called.

Jin-Roh might have been depressing but it was a damn good movie and influenced some other animes heavily.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, gets so depressing that you have to be depressed to watch it. I couldn't stand the ending with all the stuff going down and it went all psycho and all of that crap.

Oh yeah! that was depressing as hell, everybody in that series got issues and they just cuntinously attack you with depression at the end of the series.

other than Eva, Kimi ga nozumo ein, is probobly one of the most depressing series, unlike eva wich wasn't that depressing in the beginning, kgne keep you depressed from ep 3 (or somewhere around there) til' the end.

yeah, i agree...NGE was definitely depressing...>_>...in a weird way, i suppose that Lain is sort of deprerssing...in a way. :oh

AIR was the first anime I've ever shed tears on.. I became VERY attached to Kamio Misuzu in the 1st ep when
Spoiler:
she fell down head first (ouch) and espeically when I saw her cute lil dirty face.. When I saw her burst out crying in one ep, my eyes were watery.. and then at ep. 11, the time when Misuzu was at the bed in pain, and Yukito beside her, holding her hand.. I broke down hard..
even after watching that part just now, tears is falling from my eyes..
Spoiler:
plus with the thing with her sister..
:scry :crying

Grave of the Fireflies sounds very interesting.. kinda so does Neon Genesis Evangelion. Are they just movies or a series?

Wow. Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime classic. It was made ten years ago and looked as one of the most influential anime of all time. You should spare a little time to see it :)
Grave of the Fireflies is a Ghibli film... is there anything else that needs to be said lol?

It didn't blow a-hole, it was a good anime, u so retarted u can't even see...GOTF was sad.

Yay ^_^ glad to see the thread thriving. I've heard a couple very good names up here, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and Air ended up being a couple of personal favorites (probobly cause I didn't play the games :p), KgNE was pretty depressing at the start, but had a nice ending. As far as Berserk goes... well, yeah, I'd never been that confused in my life O.o . It was three weeks after I saw the end of that series (about 2 years ago) that I found out there's actually now more than double that content to this date, and we'll probobly have new Berserk by the end of 2006-early to mid 2007, which is always bitchin' news. Berserk wasn't depressing, just a severe dissapointment... even the Japanese can give great series bad time slots ^_^.
Now, for EVA, the series wasn't depressing at all. What people don't know about EVA, is that it's not a story about all those kids per se, it's a biography of Hideaki Anno's childhood. The only way I think you could possibly know this is if you saw a very rare documentary on Hideaki Anno's life and the EVA series and movie on a disc you got with an anime magazine called "Anime Play" awhile back. Because no one understood the beauty of EVA's ending (which was a manifestation showing that it wasn't till later Anno discovered he didn't need to obey the Japanese status quo to be happy in life, he could live a different way and be happy), the selfish (and psycho) Japanese fans actually sent Anno-sama death threats (which are in the EVA movie), prompting him to make the Neon Genesis Evangelion movie, which he actually says was a giant "fuck you" to the fans who spit on his masterpiece. He wanted to make the fans suffer, he wanted them to be completely confused, and he wanted them to be completely unaware of what he was doing. Anno is an incredibly brilliant man, and it shines through in his works.

On a final note, I didn't really find Shingetsutan Tsukihime depressing, I thoroughly enjoyed the series start to finish and never really felt depressed ^_^;;.

([caps lock insanity]IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES BY THE BRILLIANT DIRECTOR ISAO TAKAHATA, STOP READING THIS AND GO RENT/BUY IT NOW, YOU WILL NEVER THINK OF WAR THE SAME AGAIN [/caps lock insanity])

Haha...I didn't cry watching Grave of the Fireflies..

<----is going to hell.

However...I DID cry watching KGNE, Soukyuu no Fafner, and SaiKano. IMO those three are the most depressing anime ever (especially the last two).

^that makes 2....I found some parts sad, but didn't shed one tear. Don't see what's so sad about it. Matter of fact....I thought Grave of the fireflies a bit boring too. The anime that has made me feel the most depressed was probably......Naruto? Probably yeah.

Maybe someone needs to point something out to me....I didn't like Grave of the fireflies really or thought it was that sad.

Spoiler:
A young girl is starving so bad that she's making takoyaki outta mud... she becomes horribly malnourished and dies as her brother is frantically trying to feed her the food she needs. Her brother then gives up on life and allows himself to just wither away until his own death, unable to hold onto the last little bit of his sister he has that ends up being tossed out a window.

^--- What could possibly be more depressing than that T_T

Chrno Crusade === the end scene jus made me cry....its jus sooo sad they had to die

Air === the whole series was sad...it was jus beautifull jus wathcing it

Wolfs Rain === the whole series pulls u through sooo many emotions....the ending is jus amazing...makes u cry

Oh, I thought ragnarok was a depressing anime. The part where maya kills alice is probably the saddest scene I've ever seen.]

I don't know I don't find Grave of the fireflies that sad despite watching it twice to see if I missed something.
