Really Really Long Version: Alternative Timeline and Merged DC/Marvel universes. From the beginning...
The JSA is the banner that all costumed heroes during World War 2 fought together under. Thus, Captain America and his very close friends Jay Garrick (The Original Flash), Alan Scott (The Original Green Lantern) and Ted Grant (The First Wildcat) forms the Justice Society. However, Captain America backed by the American Govt leaves the Society and lead his own classified strike force team, codenamed the American Freedom Force, consisting of Bucky, Torch, Toro, Namor and IRON FIST (Orson Randall). Consider this the Golden Age of super heroes.
Cap sacrifices himself to stop a doomsday device set-off by the hands of Vandal Savage and the Red Skull. The Second World War Ends and the silver age of super heroes begin. The JSA continue to function, even after the death of Cap, as peace keepers of the world. Iron Fist goes into hiding. Namor returns to Atlantis to train his younger step brother, Arthur Curry. Though the war had ended, another new crisis had begun known as the MetaMutant Malady. More and more people begin to show signs of a so called Meta-gene, sometimes known as the X-Gene/X-Factor. Some JSA members branch off to combat this crisis and create a safe place for metamutants. Former JSA members Charles Xavier and Erik Magnus forms an academy to teach young metamutants to control their powers.
The JSA begin having internal struggles on how to deal with the more violent new wave of villains that arise. But as new villains come, so do new super heroes or lawless vigilantes, as some see them. Reports of an Iron Man begin coming up, protecting the property of a billionaire man named Tony Stark. A man, claiming to be a God, descends from the heavens to defend a city from Alien Invaders. A young woman from a legendary group of Amazons, approach the United States. A jolly Green Archer begins to make his presence known. Rumors of a man who could shrink to the size of an atom begin surfacing.
Erik Magnus leaves the Academy to form his own brotherhood, training them to fight violence with violence. A renowned scientist, his girlfriend and her brother, along with an accomplished pilot crash down to earth after a failed experiment in space. An equally intelligent scientist gets struck with Gamma Rays while trying to save a young boy. A dark shadow of fear begins prowling the streets of Gotham at night, and a small farm boy from Smallville moves to the big city.
The aging JSA members are forced to retire as new heroes take up their mantle. Barry Allen becomes the new Flash, Hal Jordan joins the Green Lantern Corps, and Tom Bronson, a Mutant, becomes the new Wildcat.
The new wave of heroes form their own super hero teams. Iron Man, Thor, Wonder Woman, The Atom, and the Wasp form the Avengers. Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Black Canary, Flash, Batman, Storm, and Namor form the JLA. These two teams are recognized as the two strongest super hero teams in the world.
Batman also forms the Outsiders, to deal with the dirty missions that neither of the major teams will face. The Outsiders consist of Iron Fist (who trained Bruce when he was younger), Daredevil, Black Widow, Rouge, Metamorpho, Antman, and Katana.
Meanwhile, young teenage superheroes form the Teen Titans. Robin, Spider-man (though he is often called Spider-boy), Wonder Girl, Jade, Aqua lad (Arthur),and Kid Flash.
The devourer of worlds, Galactus, then comes to earth. For the first time, all the heroes of the world unite to try and stop the Planet eater (who was responsible for destroying Krypton, and killing off the Green Martian Race, among countless others), and his heralds the Silver Surfer and Lobo. The bravery of earth, especially by the Teen Titans and Fantastic Four, touch the Silver Surfer who turns his back on his master and aid them in turning back Galactus. Lobo stays with his master to find more suitable planets with less annoyances.
The Crisis of Infinite Earths happens. Everyone gets de-aged but they move into a more modern setting.
After Continuity gets reconfigured. Namor finds Captain America, who's status changes from dead to "preserved in ice". Cap believes that the world still needs the JSA. He along with the once retired JSA memebers (who have been de-aged to their mid fifties) reestablish the JSA where they, like the X-men, train young super heroes.
The Avengers and JLA continue to protect the world from evil. Cap becomes an honorary member of both teams. Jason Todd dies and Tim Drake becomes the new Robin. Dick Greyson becomes Nightwing and he, along with his best friend Spiderman, form the Titans, a team mostly consisting of old Teen Titans Members. Tim Drake begins to lead the New Teen Titans.
Meanwhile, Hal Jordan becomes corrupt by Parallax. He destroys the Corps and Kyle Rayner becomes the last Green Lantern. After Parallax reignites the sun and apparently "dies", a new policing unit, called the Nova Corps, arise and begin defending the universe in the absence of the Green Lanterns.
Despite his apparent death, Parallax still succeeds in spreading fear throughout the universe. his impact leads to the the Kree-Skrull War. The Nova Corps, led by Richard Ryder, Captain Marvel, the Last Green Lantern, and the heroes of earth help bring it to an end. During the war, Kyle Rayner becomes Ion, creates a new central battery, and restarts the corps. His friendship with Richard Ryder creates an alliance with the two policing forces.
Eventually, Hal Jordan experiences a "Rebirth" and returns to join the Green Lanterns. Kyle becomes Ion.
Then begins the Second Crisis or the Infinity Crisis. In most recent years, distrust begin to creep up among the JLA and Avengers. Moreover, these two teams can not seem to get along and, at times, battle one another. This distrust culminates in the death of the Hero Vison, and the insanity of the Scarlet Witch. Through her reality changing powers, she creates a universe where her father, who had long since became the Evil Mutant known as Magneto, ruled over the world. Wolverine (and the Joker) was the only one not affected by the continuity shift. Then all the House of M stuff, with DC characters added into the mix, happens. At the end, Wanda uses her powers and whispers "52..." This depowers 52% of the metahumans in the world and creates, not an infinite number of worlds but 52 alternate earths.
When the heroes return home, they find that Wanda has done more then anyone could expect. An older Superman, Superboy Prime, and Alexander Luthor Jr. have escaped into this reality. Then the Infinity Crisis happens with Marvel Characters fighting alongside their DC allies. none of the major superheroes lose their powers because of Wanda, but their overall forces dwindle severly. Many depowered super heroes lose their lives, proving that they truly were heroes.
Another Continuity shift.
After the infinity crisis, the big 6 (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor) take a break for a year. Thor died after Ragnorock, but after the Continuity change, he is now lost in limbo.
During this time while filming a reality based superhero tv show, the Teen Titans, no longer led by Tim drake (He's with Batman) unknowingly face a powerful and deadly group of former JSA villians in Stamford, Connecticut. 600 people die (including 60 students and most of the Teen Titans) die in the explosion caused by Nitro. In the aftermath, new legislation, the so called Superhuman registration act comes up in congress. It is, however, rejected. Most of the next couple of months are spent in recovery, as people try to move on from the horrible accident. The super hero community keep quiet for most of the year, as more small time heroes begin proving their potential.
All hell breaks lose when Black Adam loses his family and murders a nation. A so called "World War III" begins where the heroes come out victorious. However, Black Adam's assault is the last straw for the US government who, on the last week of the year, passes the super human registration act.
Diana returns as an Agent of Shield along with her Wonder Woman identity. She is against the Registration act.
Ironman, who undergoes his Extremis transformation during the past year, agrees with it.
Superman, after seeing the horrors of Stamford, joins Iron Man.
Captain America and Batman both go against the act.
Thor is still lost.
This splits the Superhuman society in half and a great Civil War begins. The registered heroes win the war at the price of Captain America's life. Batman goes underground and forms a new Outsiders. Iron Man and Superman form a new team called the Ultimates.
In space, dark things are happening. The Sinestro Corps come knocking with an army of bug like creatures. Calling themselves the Annihilation Wave with assistance from Queen Bee's species and the Brood, they first strike the Nova Corps home world, killing everyone except Richard Ryder. He then absorbs all of the Nova corps powers and goes off to fight the Annihilation Wave. The Green Lantern Corps, along with the Kree, Skrull, and any others willing to fight, take on the Wave. Richard Ryder take on Annihlius who has the full power of the cosmic control rods, while the GLCorps and co. try to deal with the Sinestro Corps and their allies.
