After taking some consideration as to what the word benchmark really means, it dawned on me that the day Uchiha Madara was introduced in full dethrowned Itachi from being Sasuke's benchmark. Afterall, how can Itachi be Sasuke's ultimate measurement as an Uchiha when there's a superior shinobi within the clan that's alive?

Discuss...
 
One reason could be: Its a possibility that Sasuke will not end up fighting Madara alone. Itachi was an obstacle that Sasuke had to face alone but I doubt things will be the same with Madara since Madara in away effects Naruto as well.

Sasuke most likely wont be taking on Madara alone but with Naruto or somebody elses help.
 
I don't think Sasuke will have Madara as his benchmark... Does Sasuke even know about Madara at the moment???
As already said I doubt he'll be fighting Madara alone (sasuke that is)

Just on a side note though, and this may sound rediculously stupid... But is the skill difference between Itachi and Madara that big???

yeah idk if madara would be his benchmark...he seems like the type of villan whom errbody teams up to assrape

Logh - Everytime A Bell Rings, An Angel Gets His Wings

Minato is Naruto's benchmark, but do you expect him to be resurrected from the dead and Naruto beating him alone the only way the main character will surpass his "measuring stick?" Read carefully how I typed Itachi, an Uchiha, being Sasuke's benchmark. With a superior Uchiha alive who is next on Sasuke's list to persue in order to avenge his clan, how can Itachi still keep this position...?
 
Hasn't sasuke been naruto's benchmark in order for him to get strong enough to bring him back? Naruto doesn't even care about minato as a person so how could he want to surpass him? He's never even alluded to anything like that.

How is naruto gonna surpass minato when he is dead?. He cant even compare abilities.

It would make more sense to use the kyubi.

Sasuke fights madara while naruto tries to do something with the kyubi.

He is his more immediate benchmark, for that matter jiraiya is also someone naruto has to surpass.
 
Itachi was Sasuke's only true benchmark, and as said before, I don't think Sasuke will be fighting Madara alone.
 
Itachi is, or was not Sasuke's "benchmark" solely based on skill. It was his actions as well. Which is why I believe surpassing Itachi is more significant than attempting to surpass Uchiha Madara - whom he never actually witnessed during the massacre. Mere power is not always the sole factor when seeing someone as such a thing.

Madara is possibly the mastermind behind the massacre, not to mention he most likely held a lot of influence over Itachi's actions. Afterall, he was his mentor and accomplice. And he was the one to set the wheels in motion...

Until recently that was unknown to Sasuke, and he also has yet to surpass Itachi - his brother who killed both of his parents. I believe he hold more resentment for Itachi than he does Madara considering this.

I think you skipped a few chapters dude.
I'll answer both of your questions.
Yes, sasuke does know about Madara and has already confirmed that he plans to kill him. Sasuke, won't be letting anyone help and I doubt Naruto can beat someone as strong as Madara who has the sharingan, I mean, you see how he froze up against Itachi. He didn't even know he was in a genjutsu until the last minute.

Yes, Itachi is exponentially weaker than Madara. See "Kyuubi control", "Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan", and the fact that he's like 200 years old and most likely knows a whole book of ninjutsu that itachi has never seen before.

True. Given the fact that Itachi professed their former bond to being nothing more than a facade and a means to test Sasuke's capacity, I would agree that his resentment is more toward his brother. Not to mention, Sasuke did have a sort of "pfft" attitude both when the Kyuubi mentioned Madara and when Itachi revealed his true goal. However, in given time, we will soon know exactly what type of role Madara played in the massacre. We can't just discount the validity of him becoming Sasuke's new benchmark when he has become his new objective in avenging his clan. The third MS user is the last on his list. He was the former teacher of Itachi, therefore being superior. Ties have nothing to do with it. Look at Minato and Naruto. Naruto doesn't want to surpass him because he's blood related. To the contrary, he wants to surpass him because of his greatness and legacy. The same could be said about Sasuke in due time. Not only does he have Madara as his final goal in fufilling his dream, but in order to become the greatest Uchiha (even though this isn't his true objective), he will have to surpass that "wall" called Madara...
 
whats there to discuss.. you said it all.. madara is now sasuke's benchmark. as the secondary character he deserves to be more that itachi's superior.
 
Madara isn't just a superior Uchiha. He's a superior being...to everyone. I doubt there is anyone who can take him one-on-one without Kyuubihax.exe.

Until confirmed, Uchiha Itachi will ALWAYS be Sasuke's benchmark. The only reason Sasuke is going to get a benchmark stronger than Yondaime/Itachi is if Pein gets some sort of powerup, and proves himself to also be > Itachi/Yondaime, and on the same level as Madara.

What's most likely though, is that it takes a joint effort to take him out.
 
I too believe Madara will be a joint effort so he won't be a sole benchmark for Sasuke. He is the mastermind and I doubt anyone is going to solo him.
